I have eaten in none, but I plan to put an end to that very soon! Good on you for eating at 11 - I am sure you have a battle on with Joy our lovely Restaurant Whore who has a res at ElBulli later this year.

Nobu UK at number 12? very suprising.

They seem to have inadvertently omitted the Soong/Miro household as well as the Woffinden/McLaughlin household. What gives?

1 down, 49 to go. Living in sydney I’ve eaten at Tetsuya’s. Rockpool will be first on my list

only 2 German restaurants made the top 50? And none from Peru? That’s pitiful :-)
And what happened to the Austrian cuisine? Oooh yes, I forgot, the best chefs have all immigrated to the US….

yummy greetings from Peru

None. I had two reservations in Paris on my last trip (L’Arpege and L’Ambroisie) but I cancelled them both last minute.

Comment by Bea at La Tartine Gourmande 04.14.06 @ 1:41 am

Sam-I’m truly jealous of your friend, I have tried to secure a reservation there countless times but to no avail. Apparently there were 500,000 calls for 8,000 covers last year. My chances don’t look good.

Woof-how do you mean surprised, surprised that it’s not higher up or lower down the list. Personally I don’t think it warrants being so high up on the list, my meal last year was good however it didn’t come close to Daniel’s which is lower down the rankings.

Lauren-I’m sure we’ll be there next year, especially if woof keeps making his sublime ravioli.

Audrey - Wow Tetsuya’s is a real achievement , my father ate at Rockpool recently and raved about it.

Inka - Not to familiar with food in Peru, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before it’s on the gastronomic map. As for German restaurants I’m surprised they don’t feature more heavily, maybe Restaurant magazine unfairly favours British and American restaurants.

Bea- what a shame you had to cancel on your last vist.

I meant I was surprised it was as high as it is, I thought it was fine at best.

Comment by woofy 04.14.06 @ 11:15 pm

Done 15, 35 more to go, although some of them I’m not sure I really want to try. ;-)

Not quite pleased with the list though. The lack of restaurants based in Asia, especially after they convened (for the first time) an Asian panel of voters (S and I were both part of it), is a tad disappointing. You’d expect at least one restaurant in Japan to have made the list.

Cheers!

I agree the list is very predisposed towards European and American restaurants. I’ve never been to Japan but from everything I’ve seen and heard I can very well imagine that culinarily speaking it is on equal footing with countries such as france, in fact many of it’s chefs go there for inspiration.

and they took Cal Pep’s off….sniff

Comment by Monkey Gland 04.18.06 @ 9:43 pm

Sniff is right…we were at Cal Pep this weekend, and it’s to die for. It should be on the list just so I can tell people one of the best restaurants in the world is a ‘Spanish Waffle House’ :)

I was up to 8 on previous years’ lists, but with the elimination of all things UK, I am down to 5. Thank goodness De Karmeliet has reappeared, or it would be 4!

Comment by Amy 04.22.06 @ 11:12 pm

I’ve not eaten in any of them either! :-(

Disapointed with the lack of Asian establishments too and naturally I’m disapointed there is no New Zealand restaurant mentioned. Since our produce is fantastic and many restaurants world class!

Ironically though (of course I dunno for sure, I’m guessing!) some of the 50 top restaurants probably employ many New Zealand and Asian chefs and many no doubt will use New Zealand and Asian produce!

For example, New Zealand or Japanese Wagyu beef, New Zealand lamb, New Zealand kiwifruit… and almost certainly offer New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc!
